The Ryan, Fraser and Hamilton Shield National tournaments
The Ryan, Fraser and Hamilton Shield event are an Inter-Club Challenge Tournaments that is open to all archery clubs registered to Archery New Zealand and is normally shot in the month of November with the results declared at the following Archer New Zealand AGM. This is a postal style event and teams are made up of archers registered at postal level or above with ANZ. But at the GGWAS we tend to make these as much of a Society event as we can
The make up of the team should be announced before the first arrow is shot and a club can enter more than one team if they like.
The Ryan and Fraser shields
The round shot is the Short Ohio round being 96 arrows at 46 meters, 5 zone scoring with a single 6 arrow practice end.
The Ryan shield for recurve archers is shot on a full 122 cm face, while the Fraser shield is for compound archers and shot on either a reduced or full 80cm face.
A team is made up of 4 archers of which at least one team member must be of a different gender to the other team members, with archers from any age group.
The Hamilton shield
The round shot is the similar to Short Ohio round being 96 arrows, but at 35 meters, 5 zone scoring with a single 6 arrow practice end.
A team is made up of 3 archers (4 in 2017) of which at least one team member must be of a different gender to the other team members, with archers from any age group. A Team can be made up of any combination of Barebow and Longbow archers.
For all shields as long as a single arrow is shot the competition must go ahead and cannot be postponed, but each shield can be shot on different days.
GGWAS and the shields
Since 2016, The GGWAS has always tried to enter a team in all the shields each year and has done rather well under the circumstance for a small new club.
So for the our Hamilton day, we all take off our sights (apart from the Compounders) and shoot side by side with our GGWAS team members. On the Ryan day those that shoot multiple bow types all turn up with a recurve and just have a go.
